The Rail Enthusiasts’ Society, India (RES) has just launched its first publication - “Black Beauties - The Surviving Steam Locomotives of India”. This is a labour of love from Vikas Singh and is the result of his extensive ‘rail fanning’ sessions over a period of 16 years.
This is the first ever complete photographic documentation of the 303 surviving stream locomotives of India. Adding value are two essays covering the history and development of Indian steam locomotives, including the current status on restoration and revival.
Deservedly, the steam loco shed at Rewari and the UNESCO World Heritage hill railways of India are also covered in detail.
